Ooty Tourist Attractions
The quite hill station of Ooty, also known as Udagamandalam, is one of the most beautiful places in the country. Situated at an altitude of 2,240 m above sea level, it is a land of lush green hills and picturesque views. The place is one of the few hill stations developed by the British to act as a summer resort for them, during the colonial days. Some of the main tourist attractions of Ooty include :
Botanical GardenThe Botanical Garden is one of the main tourist attractions in the city. Spread over an area of 55 acres, the lush green lawns contain a wide variety of flowers, plants, ferns, orchids and rare tree species including the paper bark tree and the monkey puzzle tree (named so because monkey's can not climb it). A flower show and an exhibition of rare plants is held here in the month of may each year, displaying different type of roses, imported shrubs and rare plants. A main tourist attraction of the place is a 20 million year old fossilized tree.

LakeThe lake, situated just behind the main bus stand, is a popular picnic spot and a major tourist attraction of the city. Tourists can enjoy boating in different kinds of boats available in the boat house from eight in the morning till six in the evening. A children's park with a Toy Train, Deer Park and Mini Garden are other places to hang out. In recent years, the lake has been a venue for boat races, which are held here in the month of May drawing huge crowds. Doddabetta PeakThe Doddabetta Peak, situated about 10 kms from Ooty, is one of the most popular view points in the region. The peak, situated at an altitude of 2,623 metres from the sea level, offers the tourist some of the most picturesque views of the natural beauty of the area. Pykara FallsThe Pykara Falls are situated at a distance of about 19 km from Ooty. The falls and the area surrounding it offer amazing scenery and picturesque views. The best time to visit the place is during the month of July. The river also has the added tourist attractions of a dam and a power plant.

Hindustan Photo FilmThe Hindustan Photo Film is an industrial unit, situated about 5 km from Ooty Railway Station. Spread over a huge area of about 300 acres, the unit produces a number of film products including Indu Roll Films, Indu X-ray Films, Indu Bromide Paper, Indu Aerographic, laser recording film, CAT Film, film for space photography, photo typesetting paper and other range of films and chemicals used in film processing. Cosmic Ray LaboratoryThe Cosmic Ray Laboratory, situated in the Mutholai village of the Nilgiris, is a unique type of research center where cosmic rays coming from outside the earth's atmosphere are studied. Vital data is collected about these cosmic rays through experiments and important conclusions are drawn on its basis. The center has special importance among the scientific community and has put the city on the international map. Radio TelescopeThe Ooty Radio Telescope is an important instrument, set up at the radio astronomy center near Ooty. With its highly qualified staff and latest technology, the center is an important place for research in radio astronomy and astrophysics. The telescope is a cylindrical surface, about 530 m long and 30 m wide. It is used to keep track of celestial objects from the time of rising to the time of setting. Tribal Research CenterThe Tribal Research Center is situated at M Palada, about 10 km from Ooty Bus Stand. The tribal research center was formed to conduct studies on tribal communities, to record different kinds of changes among these communities, to prepare plans for their upliftment and mostly for the welfare of the 36 scheduled tribes of the state.
